LOHN @ Home Volume 7

LOHN @ Home is our way of sharing spaces and scent stories in our community.

Hayley Axelrad is an artist from Toronto, Ontario. She works primarily with oil paint to create cheeky paintings of dream-like scenes that make people smile. Her style is characterized by her bold use of colour and thick, deliberate brushstrokes. As an academically-trained painter, Hayley enjoys the freedom that comes with painting in such an expressive way. The imagery in Hayley’s paintings can be attributed to the deep well of visual references she’s stored in her brain as a result of her past as a fashion stylist paired with her life-long love of movies and pop-culture.

Hayley’s studio is situated at her former school, The Academy of Realist Art, and walking through the school’s halls adorned with classical paintings and drawings, you’d never guess that tucked away in the back of one of the classrooms, is a little studio bursting with a million colours, books, magazines, reference photos of every kind; you name it. As a full-time artist, Hayley works at her studio every day and therefore it sort of is like her home. LOHN scents help to make her space feel even homier (and also mask the smell of oil paint).

I am—

Fearless, driven and creative.

To me, a workspace is not complete without—

Photos of people closest to me, photos of artists and paintings that inspire me, tons of sketches, post-it notes with random ideas and of course, paint.

I recharge by—

Meditating, reading, doing yoga, watching Bravo.

The scent of eucalyptus always reminds me of—

Going to the spa and getting a massage which I do monthly because as an artist it's very important for me to take care of my body.

I light candles to—

Relax. I often light candles when I meditate.

My feel good fragrance is—

VARA all the way - I am in love with the muskiness.

I'm currently obsessing over—

Hotel lobbies. I've been thinking a lot about doing a series about them. They're so sexy and glamorous, especially a lobby bar.
