LOHN @ Home Volume 6

LOHN @ Home Volume 6

LOHN @ Home is our way of sharing spaces and scent stories in our community.

My name is Madison Schill, and I’m a Toronto native currently based in Montreal. I live with my partner Matthew, and our dog, a ten year old malamute husky mix named Yakone, or Yako for short. I’m incredibly lucky to be doing a job I love so much - helping Pinners to make a life they love by making it easier to go from inspiration, to action (that’s shopping!). You might have noticed some holiday shopping and gift guides on Pinterest if you’ve scrolled over these past few weeks - making that run smoothly is my team. Check out LOHN's Holiday Gift Guide here.

Before Pinterest, and I mean way, way before, I worked in New York and Paris as a fashion model. I helped to produce a film about my experiences, called Straight-Curve, and wrote about the journey here and there, but most notably through this Glamour magazine op-ed, and through several platforms I built to help young women and girls navigate a very difficult industry. Though I retired in 2013, it’s helped inform what I’ve been doing for the past 11 years now, in tech, shopping and fashion - to help ensure we place inclusivity at the heart of everything we do. Aspiration does not need to alienate anyone - it can just help us dream.

I am—

Rooted, constantly feeling & finding my flow.

To me, a home is not complete without—

Family, the people that make it full. I sleep best when all the people I love most are under one roof.

I recharge by—

Closing my laptop, going on a day trip with Matt, just having little pockets of newness in the midst of the everyday. That freshness helps me work better, connect with intention more, and just get subconsciously inspired.

The scent of thieves essential oil always reminds me of—

My mom. Being taken care of when I was little. Essential oils remind me of childhood - and thieves was always such a sign of being comforted when I needed it (she'd put a few drops in a humidifier when I was sick - a pro tip I still use today).

I light candles to—

Celebrate everyday. Especially in the winter, there isn't a night where I don't have a candle burning to end the day. I am ALL about not saving your best things for the right moment - live in the moment, celebrate the mundane, make each evening an opportunity to connect back to gratitude for being here. Lighting a candle does all those things for me, and it's why I stock up any time there is a sale.

My feel good fragrance is—

ERDE & the newly launched EVERGREEN.

I'm currently obsessing over—

I alluded to this above, but at Pinterest, I'd have so much fun building out our work to launch Holiday gift guides. So much goes into it, and I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to be, I guess, a connective tissue between so many talented engineering, product, editorial teams. Working with small businesses though - it's such a joy. I am deeply emotionally connected to the work, and so are they - and through them, it's amazing to see all of this creative energy that comes from building something from nothing. Creative founders, makers putting so much heart into their work is such an honour to witness - especially during such a busy time for them. So much of what I buy tends to be mementos from special projects, too- there are these beautiful memories that come from buying something attached to meaningful moments.
